Coventry BID Launches ‘Ask for Angela’ to Support Safer Nights Out

Coventry BID is proud to announce the launch of the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign across Coventry city centre venues—an important step in making our nightlife safer and more supportive for everyone.
This nationally recognised safety initiative is now being rolled out in partnership with Coventry’s late-night venues, door staff, and BID’s Night Time Economy team, with the aim of creating a safer and more welcoming environment for those who may find themselves feeling vulnerable on a night out.
What Is ‘Ask for Angela’?
‘Ask for Angela’ is a simple but powerful code phrase that anyone can use if they feel unsafe, harassed, or uncomfortable in a bar, pub, club, or any participating venue.
If someone feels threatened or needs discreet help, they can go to the bar or speak to a staff member and “Ask for Angela.” This alerts trained staff to step in and provide support—whether it’s helping the individual leave discreetly, calling a taxi, or contacting security or emergency services.
Why Is Coventry BID Supporting This?
As part of its commitment to improving the safety and experience of Coventry’s city centre, Coventry BID works closely with venues, security staff, West Midlands Police, and local partners to ensure that everyone can enjoy their night out with confidence.
The launch of ‘Ask for Angela’ complements existing initiatives such as the Taxi Marshals, Night Patrol team, and Business Crime Reduction Partnership, all working together to make Coventry’s nightlife more inclusive and secure.
Training and Awareness
Participating venues are being provided with:
-Staff training materials
-‘Ask for Angela’ posters and signage
-Guidance on best practice for handling disclosures discreetly and safely
These posters will be visible in key locations like restrooms and bar areas to remind customers that help is available, and that safety comes first.
Creating a Culture of Care
At its heart, ‘Ask for Angela’ is about more than just a phrase—it’s about building a culture of care and respect in Coventry’s night-time economy. By empowering people to seek help without fear or embarrassment, and by equipping venues to respond with sensitivity and action, Coventry BID is helping make nights out safer for all.
