A free event is being held in Coventry City Centre to help cyclists keep their bikes secure and safe.
Coventry Skydome is hosting a bike marking and cycle security session in partnership with Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) and West Midlands Police.
The bike marking event will be held on Wednesday, April 3 from 11am until 2pm, and free security marking will be available for cyclists.
Coventry BID has donated more than 200 bike marking kits for the event which will be free for cyclists.
The marking kits are robust stickers with a serial number which is added to the bike. The serial number is then added to the national Bike Register along with owner details.
Visitors to Coventry City Centre will also be able to see stencilled signage on pavements near bike racks to warn potential thieves that bikes in the area have been marked and registered.
West Midlands Police will be handing out the kits on the day and providing cycling security and general crime prevention advice.
During the event bikes can also be registered on the national Bike Register database.
Bike Register is the UK’s leading online bicycle identification platform and a marked bike is 83 per cent less likely to be stolen than an unmarked bike.
Liz Middleton, general manager of Coventry Skydome, said: “We are always looking to encourage and promote active travel to Skydome and the wider city and what better way to do it than making cycle security a priority.
“We’re really pleased to be working with BID and West Midlands Police to host this event and invite all bike owners to come along for free marking and security advice.”
Coventry BID manager Jo Glover added: “Cycling is becoming an increasingly popular way to explore our city as it is affordable and green, and this latest partnership is designed to help provide reassurance for both existing cyclists and those who are looking into purchasing a bike.
“Bike marking is an effective theft deterrent and we’re proud to be working with Coventry Skydome to provide free kits to cyclists.”
West Midlands Police hosts bike marking and registration events throughout Coventry and the wider West Midlands.
